The main inspiration for the creation of the Vitalistic Portrait was the concept of vitalism, a philosophical construct, which recognises the presence of an elusive life force in every living phenomenon and thus in living organisms. I collected various plant species around the construction site at Landstraßer Gürtel 49 & 51 in Vienna and then created an image using the phytogram technique where naturally occurring chemicals in plants are used to develop photographic materials such as negatives or gelatin silver paper. Through the use of this technique, it is the plants themselves that acquire the ability to create an image.
